Small Modular Reactors Becoming Indispensable Energy Sources

Croatia is actively exploring the integration of nuclear energy into its national strategy, with a particular focus on small modular reactors (SMRs). This move aligns with the country's broader objectives of achieving decarbonization and bolstering energy independence. The government appears committed to this path, viewing SMRs as a potentially crucial component of its future energy mix. However, the practical implementation remains uncertain, as comprehensive feasibility studies detailing energy needs and costs are yet to be completed.

The global landscape of SMR technology is still nascent. While these reactors are generating significant buzz as a forward-looking energy solution, the number of operational units worldwide is limited. Currently, only two SMRs are known to be functioning: one in Russia and another in China. This limited operational track record raises questions about the immediate scalability and reliability of the technology, especially when compared to established nuclear power generation methods.
