Snakehead fish population explodes in Taiwan's Sun Moon Lake, threatening native species

Sun Moon Lake is experiencing an unprecedented explosion in its population of invasive snakehead fish, commonly known as 'yu hu.' Local authorities have been actively engaged in electrofishing efforts to control the 'tyrants of the lake' during their breeding season.

This year's efforts have yielded staggering results, with each electrofishing session capturing over 2,500 young snakeheads. The total catch has now surpassed 12,048 individuals, a remarkable 14-fold increase from the just over 800 caught last year. Compounding the concern is the observation that the young fish are significantly larger than in previous years.

Given the sheer volume and size of the juvenile snakeheads, the Nantou County government is considering increasing the frequency of control operations. The goal is to minimize the threat these predatory fish pose to the lake's native fish populations. The county emphasizes that electrofishing is effective in capturing the young fish while they move collectively, before they disperse and become independent.

The county reported that the first two operations alone netted 6,147 fish, with subsequent sessions catching 2,793 and 3,108 respectively. This surge, coupled with the increased size of the young fish, has prompted the government to re-evaluate its control strategies to better curb the snakehead population.
