Snow leopard and bear skins found at private resort in Kyrgyzstan

Inspectors in Kyrgyzstan's Naryn region have discovered the skins of a snow leopard and a brown bear at a privately owned recreational facility. The discovery was made during checks conducted by environmental and technical service inspectors from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision.

The snow leopard is listed in the Red Book, highlighting its endangered status. Materials have been compiled regarding the discovery of the skins. The owner of the recreational site stated that the skins were likely acquired approximately 30 years ago but failed to present any permits or documents proving their legal origin.

Furthermore, the owner refused to sign the documents prepared after the inspection. All necessary materials are currently being collected to be forwarded to law enforcement agencies. They will assess the situation and determine the appropriate legal action according to Kyrgyz law. Penalties for damage to a snow leopard can reach up to 2 million Kyrgyz som, while for a brown bear, the compensation can be up to 1.5 million som.
