Snow leopard and bear skins found at recreation site in Kyrgyzstan

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan's At-Bashy district have discovered the skins of a snow leopard and a brown bear at a privately owned recreation site. The find was made during an inspection by the Environmental and Technical Service under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision.

The snow leopard is a species listed in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan, indicating it is endangered and requires special protection. Following the discovery, relevant documents were prepared by the inspectors.

The owner of the recreation site stated that the skins were acquired approximately 30 years ago. However, he was unable to produce any permits or other documents to confirm their legal origin. He also refused to sign the official documents prepared by the inspectors.

Materials regarding the findings are being collected for referral to law enforcement agencies. Legal assessments will be made in accordance with established procedures. Under Kyrgyz law, damage to a snow leopard can incur compensation of up to 2 million soms, while damage to a brown bear can result in compensation of up to 1.5 million soms.
