Social Tourism: The 'battle' for applications begins – Key dates and the 'trick' with the tax ID

The Public Employment Service (DYPA) in Greece is launching its highly anticipated social tourism program for the 2026-2027 period, a crucial initiative aimed at providing affordable travel opportunities for workers and the unemployed. Starting April 21, 2026, eligible individuals can begin submitting their applications, marking the commencement of what is often a competitive process.

This year's program boasts a substantial budget of 50 million euros, enabling the distribution of 300,000 vouchers. These vouchers will allow beneficiaries to enjoy short breaks in various accommodations listed by DYPA, requiring only a modest personal contribution. Recognizing the unique needs of certain areas, the program extends benefits, offering up to ten nights of free accommodation on islands like Leros, Lesvos, Chios, Kos, Samos, and Rhodes, and up to twelve nights with no co-payment in designated regions of Northern Evia, Evros, and Thessaly.

Beyond accommodation, the social tourism program also extends its support to transportation costs. Ferry tickets are subsidized, with participants contributing 25% of the fare, while individuals with disabilities travel for free. The program also incorporates seasonal adjustments, increasing subsidy rates during peak months like August and holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter, with a permanent uplift for accommodations in the aforementioned special regions.

Eligibility for the program is carefully defined, targeting employees with private sector contracts and unemployed individuals registered with DYPA for at least three months. Strict income limits are in place, ensuring that the benefits reach those most in need.
