Solar Lights Illuminate Waituri Community, Enhancing Safety

Residents of the Waituri community in Vuci, Nausori, Fiji, can now navigate their surroundings more safely at night following the installation of new solar lights. The project directly addresses long-standing concerns about inadequate lighting along roads and in public areas, a particular issue for community members who commute home after sunset.

Lagesh Prasad, President of the Waituri Crime Prevention Committee, emphasized the positive impact on residents' sense of security. He noted that improved lighting will make the journey home safer for those walking from work, and will also benefit children and the elderly.

The initiative received $4,500 in funding from the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs' Multi-Ethnic Grant Programme for the 2025/2026 financial year. Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh highlighted the project's significance, stating that poor lighting can increase risks after dark. He described the project as an investment in both infrastructure and community safety.
