Somali Local Forces Kill Two Senior Al-Shabab Figures

Somalia's local self-defense forces have eliminated two high-ranking leaders of the jihadist group Al-Shabab in recent operations. The Ministry of Defense announced that the successful raids took place on Friday in the Middle Shabelle region.

In one operation, forces attacked an Al-Shabab hideout on the outskirts of Daaru-Nicma village. There, they neutralized Hassan Hussein Hurshow, also known as Hassan Garabdheere. The ministry identified Hurshow as the individual responsible for the group's extortion activities in the villages of Adcaddeey, Adan-Laxey, and Daaru-Nicma, within the Ruun-Nirgood district. One of his bodyguards was also killed during this operation.

On the same day, a separate attack occurred in the village of Tawakal, where local forces neutralized another commander identified as Abdullahi Fahuud. The Ministry of Defense commended the "growing popular uprising against terrorism" and highlighted the "fundamental role of the Local Defense Forces in the national campaign to eradicate Al-Shabab."

Somalia has intensified its fight against Al-Shabab since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared a "total war" against the militants in August 2022. This campaign often involves military collaboration with the African Union mission in Somalia and airstrikes from the United States. Al-Shabab, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda since 2012, continues to carry out attacks aimed at overthrowing the government and establishing an ultraconservative Islamic state. The group controls rural areas in the country's center and south and has also attacked neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia.
