Son Heung-min to captain MLS All-Stars against Liga MX

South Korean football captain Son Heung-min will lead the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Stars in their match against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars on July 30. The game is set to kick off at 9 a.m. Korean time at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Son, who plays for LAFC, will start as a forward in a 4-3-3 formation. He becomes the second South Korean player to feature in the MLS All-Star Game, after former national team coach Hong Myung-bo in 2003. He will be joined by Julian Araujo and Philip Zinckernagel up front.

Son has shown a resurgence in form, scoring in three consecutive league matches after returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He had initially struggled in the early part of the season with LAFC, recording no goals but providing assists. "I am very happy to be selected as an All-Star," Son said. Meanwhile, Thomas Müller, who was expected to play alongside Son, will start on the bench. Müller had previously expressed admiration for Son, stating, "Son Heung-min was a great player who could have joined Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga, and I thought it would be nice to play together."
