Taiwanese legislator Wan Mei-ling has broken her silence on the escalating controversy surrounding her son, a candidate for the Taoyuan City Council. She revealed that the family has been deeply hurt by what she describes as increasingly severe smears and fabricated rumors, prompting them to consult with lawyers about potential legal action.

Wan's son, Yi-hsiang, has faced a barrage of accusations regarding past bullying incidents and involvement in gambling while in high school. While he has publicly apologized for some of the bullying and acknowledged the gambling issue, many remain unconvinced, demanding he withdraw from the election. Wan stated that she has always believed in strict discipline for her children and would never use her political influence to pressure schools or seek special treatment for her son.

I would absolutely not use privilege to oppress the school, bully school staff, nor would I use privilege to seek favors for my child.

Addressing specific allegations, Wan clarified incidents from her son's childhood and adolescence, including a kindergarten prank and the use of a nickname. She also refuted claims of him demanding a retake of a math test or her intervening in his academic affairs, calling them "absurd." Regarding the gambling case, she asserted that upon learning of it, she insisted her son be reported to the police and prosecuted according to law, emphasizing her "iron fist" approach.
