South Africa mourns footballer Jayden Adams, who died after World Cup

South Africa bid an emotional farewell to Jayden Adams, a talented midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team, who passed away on July 11 at the age of 25, shortly after participating in the 2026 World Cup.

The funeral ceremony, held at the Coetzenburg sports complex in Stellenbosch, Adams's hometown, was marked by tributes, music, and poetry. Adams died in Cape Town, with the circumstances of his death remaining under police investigation.

Thlopie Motsepe, president of Mamelodi Sundowns, remembered Adams not only for his achievements as a "proud Bafana Bafana international," "African champion," and "World Cup competitor," but also as a "son, a brother, and a father." Motsepe emphasized the player's "humility" and "capability."

But above all these achievements, he was a son, a brother, and a father, and I believe those are the titles Jayden cherished the most.

Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), noted that Adams "held a special place in the hearts" of South Africans. Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie stated that President Cyril Ramaphosa was "deeply saddened" by the loss, calling Adams "the greatest source of inspiration that Stellenbosch has ever had."

South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan stressed the need for greater support for players beyond their football careers, referencing the loss of other young players. He urged the public and media to avoid speculation regarding the cause of Adams's death.
