South Kivu: 4 dead, several seriously injured in mining accident in Kamituga

A tragic mining accident in Kamituga, located in the Mwenga territory of South Kivu, has claimed at least four lives and left approximately ten others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, July 18, at the Mabela gold site in the Kalingi neighborhood.

The tragedy occurred in a gold pit belonging to an operator identified as Walukusu, according to local civil society sources.

The gold pit, reportedly belonging to an operator named Walukusu, is where the victims were working. Preliminary reports suggest they were asphyxiated while inside the pit. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation, and rescue teams and local residents were working late into the evening to gather more information and assess the full extent of the human toll.

Given the difficulty in determining the precise number of miners present at the time of the tragedy, the death toll could potentially rise as rescue and verification operations continue.
