South Korea: Announcements on historical recognition and policy debates

Several announcements highlight efforts to recognize historical figures and commemorate significant events in South Korea.

The Gyeongbuk Patriots and Veterans Affairs Foundation has submitted a petition, supported by 2,678 signatures, to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. The petition requests the posthumous awarding of the Grand Order of National Merit, the nation's highest honor, to independence activist Seok Ju-yeong for his contributions.

In commemoration of its 10th anniversary, the Modern History Memorial Hall, in collaboration with the Gangbuk District Office and the Research Institute for Modern History, is presenting a special exhibition titled "Independence Activist Park Ja-hye: Nursing the Nation." The exhibition will run until February 28 of next year, with an opening ceremony scheduled for August 7 at the memorial hall in Gangbuk District, Seoul.

Additionally, Gyeonggi Province will host a ceremony on August 8 at the House of Sharing in Gwangju to mark the Day of Remembrance for Japanese Military "Comfort Women" on August 14. The event will include the unveiling of a bust of the late comfort woman victim Kang Il-chul, an awards ceremony for a public competition on "Peace, Human Rights, and Memory," and a cultural performance.

The Gwangju Goryeo Village, in partnership with the Goryeo Shinmun newspaper in Moscow, has selected Kim Pyo-dol as the 28th individual for its project to discover and support descendants of Goryeo independence activists in the Maritime Province of Russia. Kim Pyo-dol, a graduate of the Russian Military Academy, is recognized for establishing a Korean officers' school and unifying independence army units, for which he was awarded the Order of National Merit, Aejok class.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is accepting applications until September 11 for the "10th University Student Trade Policy Debate Competition" in 2026. Participants must submit a short paper on the preliminary topic: "Should South Korea ease artificial intelligence-related regulations to strengthen digital cooperation with the U.S. and enhance AI industry competitiveness?"
