South Korea Appoints Tech Expert Kim Tae-yu to Lead Regulatory Reform Committee

President Yoon Suk Yeol has appointed Kim Tae-yu, a professor at Seoul National University's College of Engineering, as the vice chairman of the Prime Minister-level Regulatory Rationalization Committee. This appointment highlights the administration's focus on leveraging expertise to streamline regulations.

Kim will design macro-regulatory rationalization strategies for advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and robotics, based on his understanding of industry and technology in the current era of technological hegemony.

Kang Yoo-jung, senior presidential secretary for public relations, introduced Kim as a top expert in technology economics and national strategy, with a background spanning engineering, economics, and industrial policy. Kim previously served as the presidential advisor for information science and technology during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.

Kang expressed expectations that Kim will design macro-regulatory rationalization strategies for advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and robotics, based on his understanding of industry and technology in the current era of technological hegemony. She added that Kim is the right person to lead regulatory innovation, aiming to elevate South Korea into a "technology-centric, super-gap, first-mover nation" through his outstanding leadership and convergent insights.

In a separate appointment, Kim Heung-kyu, a professor of political science and international relations at Ajou University and director of the US-China Policy Research Institute, was named president of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. Kang stated that Kim Heung-kyu's experience as a professor at the academy's predecessor, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, positions him to elevate the academy into a world-class research and educational institution for the AI era, strengthening strategic research for national interests and fostering future diplomatic talent.
