South Korea Grapples with Unprecedented Dual Surge of COVID-19 and Influenza

South Korean health authorities are on high alert due to an unprecedented convergence of rising COVID-19 and influenza cases. This dual surge, a phenomenon not observed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, has sparked concerns about a potential co-epidemic and is being closely monitored.

Recent data reveals a significant uptick in respiratory infections. During the 34th week (August 16-22), the rate of influenza-like illness (ILI) in outpatient settings reached 9.2 cases per 1,000 outpatients. This figure has shown a consistent increase over the past four weeks, surpassing the 2025-2026 season's epidemic threshold of 9.1 cases per 1,000 outpatients. Hospital admissions for flu have also climbed steadily.

Furthermore, the detection rate of influenza viruses in respiratory infection samples from outpatient clinics has nearly doubled from the previous week, with the A(H1N1)pdm09 subtype being the predominant strain. Concurrently, COVID-19 indicators are also trending upward. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have increased over the last four weeks, as have the detection rates of the virus in outpatient samples.

Health officials describe this simultaneous rise as a "first" since the pandemic began. While the current increase is not considered indicative of a rapid, widespread outbreak, authorities are preparing for potential scenarios, especially with the upcoming Chuseok holiday period. The KDCA is urging the public to diligently follow basic preventive measures, including handwashing, respiratory etiquette, and indoor ventilation. They are also encouraging vaccination, with the national influenza vaccination program set to begin on September 21st. Free vaccinations will be available for children aged 6 months to 14 years, pregnant women, and individuals aged 65 and above. The KDCA recommends co-administering flu and COVID-19 vaccines for eligible individuals.
