South Korea issues highest heatwave warning for Gangwon Province

Gangwon Province in South Korea has issued its highest-level "heatwave mega-warning" for the first time since the system's introduction in 2008. The warning, effective from 11 AM on August 6, applies to the plains of Chuncheon, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon. This marks the first time this top-tier alert has been issued in Gangwon since the system was enhanced and established.

The extreme heat is caused by a thick layer of hot air accumulating due to the simultaneous influence of the Tibetan Plateau high-pressure system at high altitudes and the North Pacific high-pressure system at mid-to-lower levels. The heatwave warning has been intensified in Gangwon's inland regions, particularly where easterly winds are flowing. Perceived temperatures in Chuncheon, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon are expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius.

The "heatwave mega-warning" is issued when extreme heat is anticipated, posing a high risk of heat-related illnesses and fatalities for the entire population, including healthy individuals. In affected areas, a three-step "survival action plan", stop, move, and check, is recommended. Most inland areas of Gangwon are currently under a heatwave advisory, and a "tropical night advisory" is also in effect for most of the province.

Kim Jeong-hee, head of the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "The first issuance of this heatwave mega-warning signifies that life-threatening extreme heat is truly upon us." He urged residents in the affected areas to immediately cease outdoor activities, move to cool locations, and implement the survival action plan to ensure the safety of family and neighbors.
