South Korea Slashes Weekend Highway Tolls for Large Families, Expands Benefits for Renters

South Korea is introducing new highway toll benefits aimed at supporting families and specific groups. Starting August 28, families with three or more minor children will receive discounts on weekend and public holiday tolls. The reduction will be 10% for households with two children and 20% for those with three or more.

This initiative, approved by the cabinet as an amendment to the Road Act, also expands toll reduction benefits to individuals who rent or lease vehicles for more than a year. Previously, discounts for people with disabilities and national merit recipients were limited to non-commercial vehicles they owned or vehicles registered to the same household.

The revised regulations now extend these benefits to leased and rented cars. Recipients of the highest levels of disability and national merit status will receive a 100% discount, while others will get a 50% reduction. To apply, eligible individuals need to visit their local administrative welfare center or the veterans' affairs office with necessary documents, including identification and proof of vehicle rental or lease agreements.

The amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Road Act, which includes these provisions, was approved at the Cabinet meeting on the 21st.
