South Korean man faces 6-year sentence request over neighbor stabbing amid noise dispute

Prosecutors are seeking a six-year prison sentence for a man in his 50s accused of stabbing his upstairs neighbor in Jeju, South Korea, after a prolonged conflict over noise disturbances.

The accused, who was arrested on charges including attempted murder, allegedly attacked the neighbor with a knife in March at a multi-family dwelling in Jeju City. He reportedly shouted, "I will kill you," before the assault. The man claims he had been suffering from noise, particularly his neighbor's dog barking, for about a year.

During the trial, the accused admitted to the physical act but denied any intent to kill. His lawyer argued that the accused only intended to threaten the victim, who was physically larger, and requested leniency, citing the accused's ongoing treatment for depression and the impulsive nature of the crime.

In court, the accused expressed remorse, stating, "I am heartbroken that I caused great trauma to the victim. I bow my head in apology." The first-instance ruling in this case is scheduled for September 10.
