Southern Europe Wildfires: Greece and Turkey Continue to Battle Severe Fires

Wildfires continue to challenge firefighters in Southern Europe, with Greece and Turkey facing particularly severe conditions. While France and Spain report easing situations and the return of evacuated residents, the battle against flames in Greece and Turkey is ongoing, exacerbated by high dryness, heat, and strong winds.

In France, the situation on the Atlantic coast has significantly improved, allowing 144,000 of the 224,000 evacuated residents to return home. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed optimism, stating "one can assume that the worst is behind us," though vigilance remains crucial. Two fire hotspots persisted on the Cap Ferret peninsula and south of Lacanau, but other fires in southern France, Burgundy, and the Fontainebleau forest near Paris were brought under control.

Spain has largely contained devastating wildfires in the Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo regions, lifting most evacuations and curfews. Relief also came from Castellón province, where a large fire north of Valencia was not spreading. The Interior Ministry downgraded the state of emergency, but urged continued caution. Firefighting efforts continue in the northwestern regions.

However, the wildfire situation on the Greek island of Crete is escalating. Hurricane-force northerly winds are fanning the flames, making firefighting a dangerous and exhausting task. A new fire broke out near Preveli, forcing the coast guard to rescue about 50 people from a coastal area due to dense smoke. Firefighters have been battling these blazes for two consecutive days, with many reportedly exhausted. Aerial firefighting efforts are limited by extreme wind conditions. Additional fires were reported on the Aegean islands of Andros, Kalymnos, and Paros. Experts attribute these conditions to an exceptional weather phenomenon with hurricane-force gusts. A slight easing of the situation is expected from this evening. Tragically, three firefighters lost their lives and four were injured in the fires earlier this week.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, emergency crews are battling numerous wildfires in the south and west, also fueled by strong winds. Since Wednesday, 169 fires have been reported nationwide.
