Southern Thailand violence risks derailing peace talks

A surge in violent incidents in Southern Thailand poses a significant threat to the ongoing peace dialogue between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani (BRN). While the negotiations are considered the main avenue for achieving peace, escalating violence complicates the process.

Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, who monitors the peace talks for the Thai government, acknowledged the challenges, noting that both supporters and opponents of the negotiations exist within both the government and separatist groups. He stressed that while dialogue is the best method for peace, simultaneous enforcement actions against those who violate the law are crucial to prevent further security deterioration.

Matha also addressed the continued enforcement of the 1941 Military Act and Emergency Decree in Narathiwat province, clarifying they are long-standing regulations. He emphasized the need for authorities to take firm action against drug trafficking and smuggling, which he believes contributes to the unrest. "Therefore, we must take simultaneous action and investigate all parties involved. It is clear that regions experiencing violence are regions with significant drug trafficking arrests," he added, noting that neighboring countries are closely monitoring the situation.
