Southwest wind and afternoon convection develop: Heavy rain advisory for 12 counties

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration has issued a heavy rain advisory affecting 12 cities and counties across the island. The advisory, announced Wednesday morning, is attributed to the influence of a southwest monsoon combined with strong afternoon convective cloud development.

The weather agency forecasts a high probability of localized heavy downpours, accompanied by lightning and strong gusts. Residents in low-lying areas are cautioned about potential flooding. The advisory specifically highlights mountainous regions in northern and northeastern Taiwan, as well as the areas south of Chiayi.

Areas included in the heavy rain advisory are Keelung, the greater Taipei metropolitan area, mountainous regions of Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli, mountainous areas of Yilan, and the southern counties of Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, and Penghu.

Recent rainfall measurements indicate intense downpours in some affected areas. For instance, Yujing District in Tainan recorded an hourly rainfall of 26.5 millimeters, while Nanxi District in Tainan registered 23.0 millimeters within the last hour. The public is advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions.
