Spain: 3,500 evacuated near Madrid as forest fire 'burns uncontrollably'

Wildfires raged near Madrid on Thursday, forcing the precautionary evacuation of approximately 3,500 residents from the town of Aldea del Fresno, located about 60 kilometers west of the capital. Emergency services in the Madrid region issued an "ES-Alert" to the population, directing them to evacuate to a nearby locality as the fire burned out of control.

This latest evacuation follows similar measures taken Wednesday night in other small communities in the same western area. While many residents from those earlier evacuations were permitted to return home Thursday as the situation improved, the fire near Aldea del Fresno prompted new displacement.

Firefighting efforts are underway, with 18 fire crews and soldiers from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) battling the blaze. Several roads remain closed due to the flames, complicating access and response efforts. The region's emergency services are working to contain the fire, which is threatening nearby populated areas.

Spain has been grappling with numerous wildfires in recent days, exacerbated by a two-day heatwave that has intensified conditions across the country. Dry brush in arid areas provides ideal fuel, allowing the fires to spread with alarming speed. The most significant fire is located in the province of Guadalajara, north of Madrid, which has consumed over 32,000 hectares since last Thursday. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), nearly 125,000 hectares have burned across Spain in 2023, marking one of the worst recent years for wildfire destruction.
