Spain battles wildfires as new heatwave looms

Spain faces a critical battle against widespread wildfires, with central regions like Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo, along with the eastern province of Castellón, being particularly hard-hit. Over 171,000 people have been evacuated or confined due to the blazes. While the government reported some positive developments in recent hours, the situation remains highly complex.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned of "difficult, complex hours" ahead as the country braces for another heatwave starting Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to soar, with some areas potentially reaching 42 degrees Celsius by the second half of the week. This extreme heat, combined with gusty winds and low humidity, will significantly hamper firefighting efforts, making Monday and Tuesday crucial days in the fight against the flames.

This year has seen a dramatic increase in fire devastation, with over 172,396 hectares burned so far, a nearly sixfold increase compared to the same period in 2025. The central regions alone have lost at least 77,000 hectares. The fire in Ávila is reportedly the largest ever recorded in Spain, scorching over 50,000 hectares with an active perimeter of 160 kilometers.
