Spain Reinstates Border Controls with Italy Over Migration Dispute

Spain's government has decided to re-establish border controls with Italy, a move set to take effect on Saturday, August 8. This action comes after Italy rejected Spain's demand to lift its own border controls, which were imposed on travelers arriving from Spain.

The dispute escalated following a significant influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, located on the north African coast bordering Morocco. Italy had initially implemented its controls on August 1, citing national security concerns related to the migration crisis.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares asserted that Italy has no valid reason to maintain its controls, emphasizing that the Ceuta migratory situation has been managed. He stated that most irregular entrants had been returned and none had reached the Spanish mainland. Spain had requested Italy to end its controls by the end of the upcoming Sunday, warning of proportional measures if Italy refused.

The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, responded that it does not accept "ultimatums or foreign impositions on national security and border control." Rome indicated that its decision would only be reviewed once there is certainty regarding security risks, terrorism threats, new migratory waves, and irregular migrants heading towards European territory. The Italian suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain, which allows for free movement, remains in place.
