Spain’s Lucía García shines as Monterrey thrash Toluca

Lucía García played a decisive role in Monterrey’s 5-1 win over Toluca on Saturday, supplying two assists in the sixth round of Mexico’s women’s Apertura tournament.

The Rayadas took control early. Aerial Chavarín opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a header that went in close to the base of the right post. García then created Monterrey’s second goal in the 20th minute, sending a cross from the left for Diana García to finish from inside the area.

García again set up the decisive move before halftime. In the 41st minute, she drove into the area from the left and squared the ball for Chavarín, who scored her second goal of the match. Toluca responded in the 53rd minute when France’s Amandine Henry struck from outside the area.

Monterrey restored its three-goal advantage in the 69th minute. García quickly took a throw-in to Jermaine Seoposenwe, who fired a powerful shot into the net. Seoposenwe completed the 5-1 score in the 90th minute with a close-range finish from a corner.

In other matches, Tijuana beat Pachuca 3-1 through goals from Dana Sandoval, Jamaica’s Trudi Carter and Daniela Carrandi. Nigeria’s Chinwendu Ihezuo scored for Pachuca. San Luis defeated Necaxa 2-0 with goals from Daniela Delgado and Enyerliannys Higuera. Querétaro will face Cruz Azul on Sunday, while Tigres UANL host Santos Laguna. The round ends Monday with Atlante against Juárez FC and Puebla visiting León.
