Spain to check travelers from Italy in response to Italian border controls

Spain is set to implement border controls on all individuals arriving from Italy, a move described as a direct reaction to Italy's recent decision to impose similar measures. The Spanish government has labeled Italy's actions as unfair and baseless, emphasizing that Italy does not share a land border with Spain.

The Italian authorities stated that their border checks are a necessary response to the ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city in North Africa. They also cited security concerns and potential terrorism threats as reasons for their decision. However, Spain questions the justification, particularly as most migrants who recently arrived in Ceuta have already returned to Morocco, and there is no data suggesting any intention for them to travel to Italy.

From Saturday until September 7, Spanish officials will conduct identity and citizenship checks at ports and airports. For non-European Union citizens, visa or residency permit verification will also be carried out.
