Spain wildfires rage, burning 45,000 hectares and forcing tens of thousands to flee

Two massive wildfires continue to rage across central Spain, burning an estimated 45,000 hectares and forcing the evacuation of nearly 60,000 residents from numerous towns in the Madrid and Ávila provinces. An additional 29,000 people remain confined to their homes.

While no significant casualties have been reported directly from these two blazes, a man was found dead in Valencia province, and five others were hospitalized due to a separate fire. Spain is grappling with numerous fires across the country, leading to further evacuations and confinements, including 6,000 people removed from three towns in Castellón, where several individuals sustained burns or smoke inhalation.

The fires in the western Sierra of Madrid have impacted 50,620 people, with 29,488 evacuated and 21,132 confined. In Ávila, 30,000 inhabitants have been displaced, and 8,000 are restricted to their residences. The combined perimeter of these two fires exceeds 200 kilometers.

Experts describe the fires as "extreme," capable of generating their own weather patterns, making them difficult to predict and control. They emit immense energy, exceeding 10,000 kW per meter, placing them beyond current firefighting capabilities. Strong, shifting winds and rugged terrain are exacerbating the situation, with the environmentally significant Tiétar river valley severely affected.

In response to the escalating crisis, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the Madrid and Ávila fires, which are close to each other, will be managed under a single command. The national emergency has also been extended to the neighboring province of Toledo to ensure effective coordination of resources. The head of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) justified the unified command for efficient management.
