Spaniard Llorente scores as San Luis stun Monterrey

Rafael Llorente helped San Luis claim a surprising 3-1 victory over Monterrey, scoring in the final match of the sixth round of Mexico’s Apertura tournament.

David Rodríguez and Óscar Macías also scored for San Luis, while Belgian forward Hugo Cuypers scored Monterrey’s lone goal. The result gave San Luis its first win of the tournament and lifted the club to 13th place with six points. Monterrey remained ninth with nine points.

Toluca moved into second place with 13 points after routing Juárez 4-0. Brazilian player Helinho, an own goal by Colombian Jesús Murillo, Owaldo Virgen and Uruguayan Federico Viñas scored for Toluca. Juárez remained last without a point.

América stayed top and unbeaten on 16 points after beating Puebla 2-0 on Saturday. Tijuana, coached by Uruguayan Sebastián Abreu, held third place with 13 points after defeating Pumas UNAM 2-0. Querétaro also recorded an upset, beating Atlas 3-1, while Guadalajara drew 1-1 with Pachuca. Pachuca’s Venezuelan striker Salomón Rondón scored his sixth goal of the campaign and leads the tournament’s scoring chart.
