Spanish town commemorates Fidel Castro's centenary with bust of José Martí

The Association Amistad y Solidaridad Láncara-Cuba celebrated the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth on Thursday by unveiling a bust of José Martí. Martí, a Cuban politician, is considered Castro's spiritual guide, according to Antonio Sobrado, president of the association.

Sobrado, who also promotes the Museum Casa de Ángel Castro and the Center for the Interpretation of Galician Emigration in Láncara, explained the choice of Martí's bust. "As Fidel did not want squares, streets, figures, or busts, we chose the figure of José Martí, his spiritual guide, to offer this tribute to Fidel and to Cuba," Sobrado told EFE.

The ceremony in Láncara, a municipality in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, drew around 300 attendees from various parts of Spain. Láncara is significant as the birthplace of Ángel Castro, Fidel Castro's father. Marcelino Medina, Cuba's ambassador to Spain, officially unveiled the bust.

Sobrado emphasized the importance of the centenary, stating, "Fidel is one more Galician; his father emigrated, and the surname came from these lands." Relatives of the Castro family also attended the event. The Casa de Ángel Castro museum houses photographs and videos from Fidel Castro's visit to Láncara in 1992.
