Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaks Avengers: Endgame box office record

The latest Spider-Man installment, "Brand New Day," has shattered box office records, achieving the biggest North American opening weekend in history. The film grossed an astounding US$360 million from ticket sales in the United States and Canada, according to Sony Pictures.

This monumental figure narrowly edged out the previous record holder, "Avengers: Endgame," which debuted with US$357 million in 2019. Initially, Sony had projected "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" to earn an estimated US$355 million, but stronger-than-expected Sunday ticket sales pushed it over the finish line.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it." Before "Avengers: Endgame," no film had ever opened with over US$300 million domestically. Previous record holders included "Avengers: Infinity War" (US$257 million in 2018) and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (US$247 million in 2015).

The success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, alongside "The Odyssey," which shares the same actors, also propelled a record overall weekend for movie theaters in the US and Canada. The domestic box office has seen a significant increase, with overall ticket sales up over 15 percent from last year, reaching more than US$6.2 billion to date.
