Sports field in Vilia becomes refuge for wildfire-displaced animals, adoption offered

The sports field in Vilia has been transformed into a temporary reception center for dozens of animals rescued from the wildfire-ravaged areas surrounding Porto Germeno. Both stray and owned pets are being brought to the site, where veterinarians and volunteers from animal welfare organizations are providing care.

While most animals are in good physical condition, they exhibit significant signs of fear and stress due to the extreme conditions they endured. "If people were scared, imagine how scared the animals were," stated Dimitris Pagonis, the deputy mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia responsible for animal protection, to ERTnews. Rescue teams, volunteers, veterinarians, and members of animal welfare groups continue to search the affected areas for any animals that might be trapped or seeking refuge away from homes.

The full extent of the devastation is still being assessed, as access to some parts of Porto Germeno remains difficult. Officials fear that more animals that did not survive may be discovered. Many residents are visiting the temporary shelter in hopes of finding their lost pets; some have been reunited, while others continue to wait anxiously. The shelter was established through a collaboration between the Municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia, Dogs’ Voice, and animal welfare bodies to ensure rescued animals are registered, examined, and temporarily housed safely.

Paghonis clarified that stray animals at the shelter are available for adoption through legal procedures, with the municipality covering veterinary examinations and adoption contracts at no cost to the adopting family. Donations of food are welcome, though current supplies are adequate due to a strong response from citizens and organizations. The contribution of volunteers, who are caring for, feeding, and walking the frightened animals, remains crucial. Paghonis also reiterated a plea to pet owners not to leave their animals unattended in holiday homes or tied up in yards, especially in high-risk areas, emphasizing that companion animals should always be kept close.
