Spotify to label AI-generated music with new 'AI-Persona' tag

Music streaming giant Spotify is set to implement a new "AI-Persona" label for music created by artificial intelligence. This new designation will begin appearing on the platform in mid-September, according to a company announcement.

The introduction of the AI-Persona label comes in response to user feedback concerning artist profiles that initially appear to belong to human artists but are ultimately revealed to be AI-generated. Spotify hopes that creators of AI-generated music will voluntarily adopt the AI-Persona label. The company also plans to conduct its own reviews of the most popular profiles that seem to be AI-created.

Users who click on the AI-Persona label will be able to see whether the artist profile has openly disclosed its AI origins or if the label was applied following a Spotify review. In the future, Spotify will no longer recommend music from AI-Persona profiles unless a user specifically chooses to listen to it.

The role of AI in music has been a growing topic of discussion. AI-generated music has already topped charts, infiltrated artist profiles like the Swedish band Tiktak, and likely appeared on Spotify's viral playlists under pseudonyms such as "Sienna Rose." Previously, Spotify attempted to distinguish AI music from human creations with its "Verified by Spotify" badge.
