Spurs are not panicking after two straight defeats

Tottenham Hotspur have opened the Premier League season with two defeats and no goals, but manager Roberto De Zerbi says the club is not panicking.

A 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United left Spurs bottom of the table after they began the campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Brentford. The team has failed to score in its first two league matches for only the third time in club history, and the first since the 1974-75 season.

“There's no panic. I know our direction and the plan,” De Zerbi said. He apologized to supporters and called for hard work, improvement and better understanding between the players.

Tottenham have spent more than £300 million in this transfer window, while De Zerbi has brought in eight players since the end of last season. He said he hoped to complete at least one more major signing before the window closes on Sept. 1.

“We are disappointed with the result because until the first goal we conceded, I felt we played better than Newcastle,” De Zerbi said. “We created many chances to score, but we need to improve the final decision because that is what makes the difference.” Spurs finished 17th in each of the past two seasons and are now trying to establish a new identity under De Zerbi.
