Sri Tanjung assemblyman Rajasekaran resolves flood and poverty issues

Since his election in 2023, Datuk Dr. G. Rajasekaran, the state assemblyman for Sri Tanjung, has made assisting his constituents his top priority. In less than three years, he has successfully tackled several long-standing issues that plagued the area, demonstrating a commitment to improving the lives of the people he represents.

One of the most significant achievements has been the resolution of persistent flash floods in Kampung Paya, a problem that had affected the area for over a decade. Heavy rains combined with high tides frequently inundated the residential area, impacting approximately 7,000 residents. Rajasekaran initiated efforts that led to the construction of a water retention pond last year, effectively overcoming the flash flood issue and bringing relief to the community.

Efforts were made to find a solution to this problem. As a result of the water retention pond construction project last year, the flash flood problem has been overcome, bringing relief to the residents.

Beyond flood mitigation, Rajasekaran has plans to enhance the Sungai Kampung Paya riverside area into a recreational hub and tourist attraction. This initiative aims to provide safe spaces for leisure activities, particularly for young people interested in fishing. Furthermore, a multipurpose hall is planned to serve the community's needs, underscoring a holistic approach to local development.

This project was a sick project left by the previous Barisan Nasional government, but it was successfully completed with the help of the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and the local authorities to meet the needs of the non-Muslim community.

Rajasekaran also reported the successful completion of a stalled crematorium project, which had been neglected for over ten years. He described it as a "sick project" left by the previous Barisan Nasional government. Its resolution was facilitated with the support of the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and local authorities, ensuring the needs of the non-Muslim community are met. Additionally, efforts are underway to address 'blackspot' accident locations in collaboration with local authorities and the Public Works Department.

In terms of welfare, Sri Tanjung has declared zero extreme poverty, making Negeri Sembilan one of the earliest states to achieve this milestone. Previously, 16 families with incomes below RM250 per month received various forms of assistance, including welfare aid, school support, native aid, food baskets, and a one-time cash payment of RM600. Rajasekaran noted that the state government's manifesto, initially focused on the B40 group, has expanded to include the M40 group, ensuring broader societal benefit. The state government has also consistently allocated RM2 million annually for non-Muslim affairs since 2018, a commitment unprecedented in previous administrations.
