SSANU Warns FG Against Delay in Implementing New Agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning against any delays in implementing a recently signed agreement with the federal government. The union is demanding the immediate activation of an Implementation Monitoring Committee to oversee compliance and address any violations.

NEC seriously warned against the denial of negotiated benefits, punitive postings, delayed promotions, harassment, or any form of victimisation arising from members’ participation in lawful union activities.

SSANU emphasized that the agreement must be executed promptly, fully, and without discrimination. This stance was solidified during the association's 55th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Bauchi. The NEC also resolved that the benefits outlined in the agreement are exclusively for constitutionally recognized members whose membership is established through voluntary admission, registration, and payment of check-off dues.

NEC further resolved that the implementation of the agreement must be done promptly, fully and without encroachment and discrimination. Council also called for the immediate activation of the Implementation Monitoring Committee of the agreement as contained in the document in order to ensure compliance and address violations.

Branches have been instructed to maintain accurate membership records and report any instances of non-compliance, marginalization, or victimization. The union commended the National Universities Commission and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission for their roles in forwarding the agreement and issuing the implementation circular, respectively. However, SSANU urged both federal and state governments to urgently release the necessary funds for the agreement's implementation and the payment of arrears.

The council further affirmed that the agreement applies only to constitutionally recognised members of SSANU, whose membership is established through voluntary admission, registration and payment of check-off dues in various branches.

The NEC communique highlighted the signing of the 2026 agreement on June 29, 2026, as a "landmark achievement" concluding years of renegotiation. This agreement includes a 35 percent upward review of emoluments through the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA), improved earned allowances, and provisions for staff training and development. SSANU also warned against punitive actions like denial of benefits, delayed promotions, or harassment for members participating in lawful union activities.
