SSS re-arraigns jailed Ansaru leaders, terrorism convicts on fresh charges

Nigeria's State Security Service (SSS) has brought fresh charges against five individuals previously convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses. The group includes two commanders from the Ansaru militant group and three other men convicted for their involvement in a recent school abduction in Oyo State.

The five defendants, Mahmud Usman Muhammad (also known as Abu Bara’a and Abbas Mukhtar), Abubakar Abbas (also known as Isah Adam, Mahmud al-Nigeri and Malam Mamuda), Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa and Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar), were arraigned before Judge Salim Ibrahim on existing and four new charges. These charges encompass the nationwide impact of their alleged terror activities.

This re-arraignment follows the SSS's dissatisfaction with the life sentences previously handed down. The agency had vowed to appeal the judgments, arguing that the penalties were not commensurate with the gravity of the offenses, and sought the death penalty. The SSS also amended the existing charges against three of the convicts linked to the Oyo State abduction, increasing them from six to ten counts to encompass a wider range of alleged crimes and bringing the two jailed Ansaru leaders into the indictment.

During Wednesday's hearing, the prosecution informed the court of the amended charges filed on July 29. All five defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecution requested that the defendants be remanded in SSS custody pending trial. Despite opposition from the defense, Judge Ibrahim granted the request, ordering the defendants to remain in SSS custody.
