State House Vows Tougher Action Against Theft of Govt Medicines After Kamwenge Conviction

Uganda's State House Health Monitoring Unit (SHMU) is stepping up its fight against the theft of government medicines, vowing to pursue offenders relentlessly. This renewed commitment follows the conviction of Alison Muhwezi, a former Assistant Inventory Officer at Rukunyu General Hospital in Kamwenge District, for stealing drugs valued at around Shs300 million.

Dr. Warren Naamara, Executive Director of SHMU, stated that the conviction serves as a strong warning to public servants who steal or misuse government medical supplies. He emphasized the unit's dedication to protecting healthcare delivery nationwide, noting that medicine theft directly impacts patient access to essential treatments. "We shall continue hunting down those involved, have them arrested, arraigned before court, and ensure they are held accountable," Dr. Naamara pledged.

The case originated from a 2019 police audit at Rukunyu Health Centre IV. Investigators discovered Shs300 million in medical supplies missing from the facility's drug store. Muhwezi, identified as the primary suspect, entered a plea bargain with the prosecution. He has already refunded Shs20 million towards an agreed compensation of Shs150 million and must repay the remaining Shs130 million within two years. In addition to financial restitution, the court has barred Muhwezi from holding public office for 10 years.

SHMU plans to continue conducting inspections, audits, and investigations across health facilities to ensure government medicines reach their intended recipients. The unit aims to safeguard healthcare services and combat corruption within the sector.
