Suspected SPLA-Io Fighter Killed After Fatal Shooting in Koboko

The Uganda Police Force is bolstering its security presence and intelligence operations across the West Nile sub-region to curb rising crime rates and ensure public safety. This intensified effort comes amid several reported shooting-related murder incidents in the area.

In a significant incident, police killed a man identified as Moses Acio, whom they described as a suspected member of the South Sudan People's Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO). According to regional police spokesperson Josephine Angucia, Acio was engaged by security forces after allegedly fatally shooting a woman at the Lobule Refugee Settlement in Koboko District. Police coordinated with the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) to intercept the suspect, who reportedly opened fire on the security team along the Yumbe-Koboko Road.

Preliminary investigations suggest Acio, who had recently crossed into Uganda from South Sudan, went to his father's home in the Lobule Refugee Settlement. There, he allegedly demanded money from tenants, and when Mariam Etitu, a tenant, stated she had none, he shot and killed her. The motive appears to be robbery, with police alleging he demanded Shs10,000 from each resident.

In parallel operations, police apprehended three individuals suspected of cattle theft and attempting to sell the stolen animals in Arua City. The Traffic Police Department is also increasing its enforcement of traffic regulations to improve road safety. Authorities have indicated that these enhanced security operations will continue to address violent crime, livestock theft, and traffic offenses throughout West Nile.

The information was quickly relayed to Koboko Police Station, where the District Police Commander liaised with the UPDF. The suspect was intercepted along the Yumbe-Koboko Road, where he reportedly opened fire on the security team and was put out of action.
