STEM50 initiative to reward young researchers with cash prizes and career opportunities

Slovenia is launching STEM50, a national program designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Spearheaded by the Slovenian Institute of Quality and Metrology (SIQ), in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (GZS) and the Institute Engineers and Engineering! (ZIIB), the initiative seeks to systematically link universities, businesses, and institutions.

The program's core aim is to recognize and reward master's and doctoral theses that have a proven track record of practical knowledge transfer. Gregor Schoss, director of SIQ, explained that the inspiration for STEM50 came from a personal experience. His daughter, after receiving a Krka award for her doctoral thesis, prompted him to consider why similar recognition wasn't available for STEM fields.

We want to encourage young people to show their best knowledge in the field that interests them most and that the economy needs.

STEM50 aims to provide crucial motivation for young researchers, offering financial awards and a pathway to top employers. This initiative acknowledges their hard work and knowledge, serving as a valuable stepping stone into the professional world. Several Slovenian universities, including FERI, FGG, FS UM, FE, and FRI, have already pledged their support, with formal agreements expected soon. The selection of award recipients will involve these universities, the GZS, and SIQ, with promotional support from partners Mediade and the participating faculties.
