Stockholm Moderates propose 'waste commission' to find 50 billion kronor

Moderaterna in Stockholm and the Stockholm Region are proposing the creation of a "waste commission" to identify potential savings of 50 billion Swedish kronor. This initiative mirrors a national "waste commission" launched by the government and Sweden Democrats to scrutinize government spending efficiency.

Christofer Fjellner, the Moderate party's lead candidate in Stockholm, stated that the commission would examine expensive procurements and cost overruns in investment projects. He also suggested it could review political decisions deemed wasteful, citing the ban on fossil fuel advertising in Stockholm's public transport as an example. Fjellner acknowledged that the definition of "waste" might differ between political parties, expressing pride in the Moderates' potentially narrower definition.

Alongside Axel Conradi, the Moderate group leader in the region, Fjellner indicated that if elected, they would partially fund their budget by reducing waste. They believe these savings could eventually improve welfare services, enhance security, and further lower taxes. Conradi pointed to infrastructure projects with escalating costs as examples of regional waste that warrant investigation, referencing the Nya Karolinska hospital project, which exceeded its initial budget and is projected to cost 61 billion kronor by 2040, including operations.

When questioned about why such a commission hadn't been established earlier and if their party had been immune to waste, Conradi defended the Nya Karolinska hospital as one of the world's best, while admitting that lessons could be learned from past projects. The proposal aims to find significant financial efficiencies within local government operations.
