Nigeria's Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Thursday cautioned against the politicization of insecurity in the country, asserting that the challenges do not originate from President Bola Tinubu's current administration. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Gombe State, Umahi criticized what he termed the "extreme" use of insecurity by some politicians as a political weapon, particularly as elections approach.
When people talk about insecurity, especially extreme politicians, and insult the President as if insecurity just started within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is very unfortunate.
"When people talk about insecurity, especially extreme politicians, and insult the President as if insecurity just started within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is very unfortunate," Umahi stated. He stressed that security is a shared responsibility and should not be reduced to partisan politics. "Security is the job of everyone. Security should not be politicised. Why is it that anytime we are approaching elections, there is heightened insecurity? It is very unfair," he added, invoking divine judgment on those who might be involved in fueling insecurity for political gain.

The minister also voiced his confidence in President Tinubu's leadership and the developmental progress under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government. He commended Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State for his "remarkable achievements" and the "cordial and productive" relationship between the state and federal governments. "I am delighted that Gombe is an APC state. I am proud of the leadership of Governor Inuwa Yahaya and proud of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The achievements of the APC government give us confidence that we are moving in the right direction," Umahi said.
If anyone has a hand in insecurity because the person wants power, God will resist such a person. We stand with the President, we pray for him, and this phase will pass. We will overcome.
Looking ahead, Umahi announced that construction on the new Gombe Super Highway would begin within 30 days. This project, part of a larger 700-kilometer network, will connect Gombe and Biu and is expected to significantly improve transportation, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and boost economic activities in the region. The highway will be built by Hitech Construction Company.
