Storm Fells Trees, Cuts Power in Southern Lithuania

A powerful storm, characterized by intense winds and hail, has struck southern Lithuania, leaving a trail of disruption. The storm, which included a supercell event near Leipalingis, caused significant damage, with trees falling across roads and making them impassable.

Emergency services, including firefighters, are actively engaged in clearing the fallen trees that are obstructing traffic on routes like the Leipalingis-Merkinė road. The severe weather has also led to widespread power outages, with approximately 2,500 customers reported to be without electricity around 7:50 PM. Meteorologists warn that further power disruptions may occur as the storm progresses.

The supercell with hail and very strong squalls passed through. Road No. 133 Leipalingis–Merkinė is impassable. Firefighters are working to remove fallen trees.

Residents in the affected areas are being urged to exercise caution. They are advised to stay clear of trees, avoid parking vehicles near them, and refrain from touching any downed power lines.
