Storm Halts Aristophanes' 'Peace' Performance at Epidaurus; Spectators Evacuated

A performance of Aristophanes' "Peace" at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus was abruptly halted Friday night due to a sudden, intense storm. The downpour forced organizers to cancel the play approximately one hour after its commencement, leading to the evacuation of the roughly 6,500 attendees.

The storm broke out shortly after 10:00 PM. Initially, audience members remained in their seats, and the actors continued their performance, hoping the weather would improve. Despite the disruption in the stands, the play carried on for a few more minutes. However, as the storm intensified and the theatre's lights were turned on, it became clear that continuing the performance was impossible.

An announcement over the loudspeakers confirmed the definitive cancellation of the show. Spectators were instructed to leave the premises as the venue was being cleared. Reports indicate that many attendees attempted to shield themselves from the heavy rain using umbrellas, raincoats, and even the cushions they had brought for the stone seats of the ancient theatre.
