Storms around Lake Constance were exceptionally violent, says DWD

The German Weather Service (DWD) has described the severe storm that swept through parts of Baden-Württemberg and around Lake Constance as exceptionally violent. Meteorologists highlighted the remarkable strength of the wind gusts.

A measurement station in Schaffhausen recorded wind speeds of up to 143 kilometers per hour, classifying it as hurricane force 12. The DWD reported that the thunderstorm front moved from Switzerland across the High Rhine towards Lake Constance. Around 10:20 AM, speeds of approximately 130 kilometers per hour were measured at a station in Steckborn, Switzerland.

The severe storm around Lake Constance on Friday was exceptional.

High wind speeds were also recorded on the German side, with Friedrichshafen experiencing 114 kilometers per hour and Weilheim in the Southern Black Forest reaching 112 km/h. The storm brought heavy hail, with hailstones up to five centimeters in diameter, which can be particularly dangerous due to their high speed and altitude when falling.

As the thunderstorm front moved eastward, it weakened. Lindau recorded wind speeds of about 105 kilometers per hour. The weather system consisted of numerous thunderstorm cells, some of which intensified and persisted for extended periods, particularly south of Reutlingen where they produced large hail. In contrast, the storm was less severe in the Stuttgart area, according to the DWD.
