Storms Batter San Cristóbal de las Casas, Causing Fallen Trees and Power Outages

San Cristóbal de las Casas in Mexico's Chiapas state suffered significant damage Tuesday afternoon due to intense rains and powerful winds.

Fallen trees were a major source of disruption. In one incident near the ISSSTE clinic, a large tree collapsed onto four parked vehicles, causing considerable damage. Another tree fell on a house in the Cerrada del Túnel area, resulting in material losses but no reported injuries. Firefighters also noted a collapsed wall in the northern and southern parts of the city.

Adding to the disruption, an electrical transformer belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) exploded in the northern zone, leading to a power outage. CFE personnel are reportedly working to address the issue.

Local authorities, including Municipal President Fabiola Ricci Diestel and Civil Protection delegate Víctor Amézcua, confirmed that several businesses and homes were affected. Three market stalls in the northern zone sustained damage, along with three houses and a shed in the Nueva Hermosa, El Progreso, and América Libre neighborhoods. Heavy rains also caused localized flooding in sections of Calzada del Cementerio due to accumulated garbage and forest debris.
