Storms kill at least eight in central China; Typhoon Bavi approaches

Severe thunderstorms have struck China's central Hubei province, leaving at least eight people dead. The storms, which brought winds gusting up to 149 km/h, hit cities including Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning on Monday evening, according to state media reports citing provincial emergency management. This extreme weather event is part of a broader pattern of increasingly frequent climate-related disasters impacting China.

Meteorologists are issuing further warnings for heavy rainfall in southeastern Guangxi and eastern Jiangsu and Shandong provinces, with up to 260 mm of precipitation expected in 24 hours, raising concerns about potential landslides. The National Meteorological Center also forecasts tornadoes in other parts of northeastern and southern China. These weather conditions pose a significant threat to agricultural regions like Hubei and Shandong, where crops such as corn, peanuts, and vegetables are currently being harvested.

Experts attribute these severe weather events to climate change, which is projected to cause billions of dollars in annual economic losses for China. Recent floods have already submerged cities, disrupted industries, and damaged crops. Adding to the nation's weather-related concerns, China is also on alert for Super Typhoon Bavi, which is tracking across the Pacific Ocean towards Taiwan, having already brought destructive winds to Guam and other Pacific islands.
