Strong 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia, Killing 20

Indonesia – A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia early on June 30, 2026, killing at least 20 people and causing widespread destruction. Buildings collapsed and panic ensued in the seismically active region.

Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning, calling for coastal residents to evacuate to higher ground. However, the warning was later lifted after the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency reported no significant changes in sea levels that would pose a threat to coastal communities.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 68 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende in the East Nusa Tenggara province, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake triggered landslides in several areas, burying homes and cutting off roads. Rescue teams are working to find two missing individuals believed to be trapped under mud.

Communication disruptions due to power outages are hindering efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and conduct search and rescue operations. The National Disaster Management Agency has deployed a helicopter to assist with logistics and potential evacuations, given the challenging geography of the island chain.
