Student dies from electric shock while trying to retrieve a fishhook

A 14-year-old student died after trying to remove a fishhook caught on an electrical wire with an iron pole in Kampung Langgar, Kota Bharu.

Mohamad Amiruddin Anwar Md. Azam suffered the electric shock at about 5.15 p.m. and died on the way to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II. A doctor who lived nearby performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before he was taken to the hospital.

His mother, Norhabibi Jaafar, said she learned about the incident from her third child. When she reached the scene, she could only pray after seeing Mohamad Amiruddin lying rigid. She said she had accepted the situation after seeing his condition, before he died during the journey to hospital.

Fortunately, a doctor who lived near the scene came to help perform CPR before he was taken to HRPZ II.

Norhabibi said her son had earlier accompanied her to Sekolah Kebangsaan Langgar to collect another child. After returning home, he went out with his younger brother, Azamuddin Azwa, and their relative Eizzrayyan Riduan. Azamuddin said his brother noticed the fishhook while they were riding bicycles, then returned home, about 100 metres away, to get an iron pole normally used to pick fruit.

Mohamad Amiruddin was believed to have hooked the fishhook with the pole and received the fatal shock. Azamuddin saw him collapse while still holding the pole. Eizzrayyan, who was nearby, tried to hold him and was also shocked. Eizzrayyan remained under treatment at the hospital. Mohamad Amiruddin, described by his mother as an enthusiastic angler, was buried at 9.20 a.m. at the Mukim Langgar Islamic Cemetery.

Seeing his condition then, I had already accepted it. He died while on the way to the hospital.
