Students Advised on Etiquette for Religious Gatherings

Students attending religious gatherings, or majelis, are reminded of the importance of adhering to specific etiquette, as outlined by Hadratussyekh KH Hasyim Asyari in his work 'Adab al Alim wa al Mutaalim.' These guidelines aim to foster respect and order within the learning environment.

Upon entering a majelis, a student should begin by offering a greeting to all present, ensuring their voice is clear enough to be heard, especially by the teacher. This initial gesture sets a tone of respect for the gathering and its participants. Kiai Hasyim Asyari emphasizes that a student should not disturb existing attendees by passing them to reach the teacher directly.

Instead, the student should find a place at the end of the row where they entered, unless invited forward by the teacher or other attendees. The teachings also caution against taking another person's seat or intentionally crowding others. Accepting an offered seat is permissible only if there is a clear benefit for others, such as being closer to the teacher to ask questions or if the new arrival is elderly or influential.

Further guidance addresses seating positions: students should avoid sitting in the middle of a gathering, directly in front of someone unless necessary, or between two friends unless they agree. Sitting above someone of higher status is also discouraged. The advice extends to study habits, encouraging students to gather with their peers to discuss lessons, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the material without disruption.
