Successful "Hello, Dolly!" Musical Production in Langenlois

Langenlois's Schloss Haindorf has embraced a new era under artistic director Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz, successfully staging the American musical "Hello, Dolly!" This production marks a significant shift from the venue's long-standing operetta tradition, proving that the theater can maintain its appeal while exploring new genres.

Florian Hurler directed the lively production, which, despite acknowledging some dated gender role clichés, navigates the ups and downs of love towards a predictable happy ending. The musical itself is based on Thornton Wilder's 1954 play "The Matchmaker," which in turn was inspired by earlier works dating back to 1834. The stage design by Hanni Görg and Anna-Maria Grillmaier was commendably simple, while Anna-Sophie Lienbacher's costumes were vibrant and period-appropriate.

While the first act seemed slightly subdued, possibly due to the tropical heat, the ensemble's energy and joy were palpable in the second act. Cornelia Horak delivered a masterful performance as the ever-present matchmaker Dolly, skillfully manipulating her clients towards matrimony with vocal prowess and comedic timing. She embodied the character's authoritative yet approachable wisdom perfectly.

Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz, in the role of the miserly Horace Vandergelder, managed the delicate balance of portraying the character's less appealing traits while remaining a sympathetic figure. Although primarily an actor and comedian, his performance was not diminished by his singing capabilities. Supporting cast members Loes Cools, Victoria Sedlacek, Valentin Clementi, and Jakob Riegler also shone, demonstrating strong musical and acting talents.
