'Suicide' ruled murder: 2 uncles arrested in death of 14-year-old Damlanur

An investigation into the death of 14-year-old Damlanur Sarihan in Van's Başkale district has taken a dramatic turn, with authorities now suspecting murder rather than suicide. The case, initially treated as a suicide, was reopened by the Ministry of Justice's cold case unit, leading to a deeper probe.

Damlanur was found dead from two gunshot wounds to the abdomen in her uncle Ferdi Sarihan's home, with a Kalashnikov rifle nearby. Investigators noted the absence of fingerprints on the weapon, conflicting statements from family members, and testimonies from anonymous witnesses suggesting the incident was a "murder and execution, not suicide." These factors prompted the shift in the investigation's direction.

Further complicating the case, gunshot residue was detected on the hands of another uncle, Sinan Sarihan. The rifle used was deemed unsuitable for suicide, and the lack of fingerprints on it raised further suspicion. Phone records revealed that Sinan Sarihan acquired a new phone line after the incident and frequently contacted E.S., another suspect in the case, who had a falling out with the family and left the village.

Following surveillance and wiretapping, simultaneous operations were conducted in Tekirdağ, Hakkari, and Van. Sinan Sarihan was apprehended in Çerkezköy, Tekirdağ; İ.E. in Yüksekova, Hakkari; and Ferdi Sarihan, N.S., E.S., K.S., and a minor, Z.S., in Başkale, Van. After legal proceedings, Ferdi and Sinan Sarihan were formally arrested. The other five suspects were released under judicial control.

The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events leading to Damlanur Sarihan's death, with the focus now firmly on a homicide investigation.
